BUCYRUS—Early voting is underway at the Crawford County Board of Elections for the May 5 primary election.
When voters request a ballot for a primary election, they must declare a party or choose to vote on an “issues only” ballot.
The issues that are appearing on this election’s ballot will include one for people residing in the Wynford School District. School officials have placed an annual income tax of 1.75 percent on the earned income of individuals residing in the district for the next 10 years, beginning in January of 2027 to help pay for the district’s current expenses.
Other issues appearing on the primary ballot include renewal tax levies for emergency services in Jefferson, Liberty and Polk Townships and Galion 1A and 4A will be voted on the sale of alcohol on Sundays.
There are several contested Republican races for positions on the Republican Central Committee. Those include:
- Kurt Fankhauser is running against Eric Griebling for Bucyrus 2B representative.
- Gary Daiber is running against Joyce Schifer for Bucyrus 3B.
- Michael Bear is running against Elmer Copp for Galion 2B.
- Julie Bell is running against Gina Cole for Polk Township.
Local candidates for key positions include several Republicans running unopposed in the primary:
- Matthew Crall (current prosecutor) running for Common Pleas Judge of Probate and Juvenile court
- Current Crawford County Common Pleas Judge Sean Leuthold is running unopposed on the Republican ticket for his seat.
- Current Crawford County Commissioner Tim Ley is running unopposed for his seat
- Robyn Sheets is running unopposed to be on the November ballot for her current position as Crawford County Auditor
- Jeffrey McClain of Upper Sandusky is running for State Representative for the 87th District, a position currently held by his son, Riordan McClain, who cannot run again due to term limits. He will face-off in the general election against write-in candidate, Democrat Lora Covrett.
There are no Democratic or Libertarian candidates running opposed in any local races during the primary.
The Crawford County Board of Elections is located in the lower level of the Crawford County Courthouse in Bucyrus and will be open extended hours for early voting.
