A little rain wasn’t enough to slow progress at the Crawford County Community Garden. Volunteers gathered on April 18 to add the finishing touches to the new space, located on Clinton Street off N. Lane Street in Bucyrus.
The garden’s mission is to give Crawford County residents a place to grow fresh, local produce; help reduce food insecurity; and strengthen community connections. It also offers participants the added benefit of regular outdoor activity that supports heart health.
Thanks to a donation from United Way, the nonprofit organization installed 12 raised beds. Additional support from the Ohio Department of Health’s Healthy Eating, Active Living grant funded gardening tools and other essential supplies.
The project has inspired an outpouring of generosity. Quinn Brothers provided a sodding machine to carefully remove the top layer of grass. A local landscaper volunteered his expertise in laying out the plot. Bob operated the front‑end loader, and many others contributed good old‑fashioned sweat equity.
There is ample room to expand as interest grows. “We are looking to expand the program next year in Crestline and Galion,” Radfeld said.
Of the 12 raised beds, three remain available and are expected to fill quickly. The cost is $20 per bed for individuals, while nonprofit organizations may participate at no charge. Gardening tools are provided, and participants are asked to tend their assigned bed at least once a week. Vegetables, herbs, flowers, or a combination of all three are welcome.
The Community Garden also maintains a Facebook page filled with updates, resources, and gardening tips. Experienced gardeners have volunteered to assist newcomers with questions throughout the growing season.
