BUCYRUS — A domestic dispute turned into a high-stakes standoff late Sunday night, ending in an officer-involved shooting that left a Bucyrus man dead and a neighborhood shaken.

According to a media release issued Monday by Bucyrus Police Chief Jon A. Dorsey, officers were called to the 900 block of East Warren Street around 10:21 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, police encountered Paul A. Desmarais, 41, who was reportedly wearing body armor and armed with a firearm.

The situation escalated quickly as Desmarais barricaded himself inside the residence, sparking a massive multi-agency response. For several hours, local and state law enforcement attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender. When negotiations failed, officers deployed less-lethal tactics, but the suspect remained defiant.

The standoff reached a breaking point early Monday morning when Desmarais claimed to have an explosive device and fired multiple shots at officers. Police returned fire, fatally striking Desmarais.

Crawford County Prosecutor Matthew Crall later clarified that the fatal shot was fired by an officer from a separate law enforcement agency that had been called to the scene to provide assistance.

Authorities cleared the residence and confirmed that explosive materials were located and contained. Chief Dorsey confirmed that no officers were injured during the exchange and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Because the incident involved a fatal shooting by law enforcement, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been called in to lead the investigation into the shooting, while the Bucyrus Police Department continues to investigate the initial domestic dispute.

A massive array of departments assisted at the scene, including Sheriff’s offices from Crawford, Richland, and Ashland counties, as well as officers from Mansfield, Lexington, Ontario, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Official Press Release from Bucyrus Police Department.

FreeWire will continue to follow this developing story as BCI releases further findings.
