Crawford County Solid Waste District expands services, adds Title Office

BUCYRUS — The Crawford County Solid Waste District’s Recycling Building is up and running at its new location. The newly constructed building at 2540 E. Mansfield St., opened to the public a few weeks ago.

In addition to housing the Solid Waste District’s operations, the new facility is also the new home of the Crawford County Title Office, which recently relocated from its long-time spot in the Southern Lights Shopping Center on Marion Road. The State Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is still located there, for now.

“The title office is county-operated and the BMV is a state agency,” said Brian Rockwell, executive director of the Solid Waste District. “The Clerk of Courts oversees the title department, and they’re renting part of this new building from us.”

While the title office has made its move, the BMV may be relocating as well. Plans are in motion to move the BMV to the Whetstone Plaza in the near future. Details will be announced once finalized.

The new recycling center has allowed Rockwell and his team to expand their services and improve accessibility for residents across Crawford County. Recycling containers are now located behind the building for public drop-off.

“This space finally gives us the flexibility we’ve needed,” said Rockwell. “We designed the parking lot to handle truck traffic and higher volumes of visitors, so we can better serve the public.”

Previously, the Solid Waste District held special recycling events, such as tire, paint, and electronics collections, at the Crawford County Fairgrounds, but scheduling was often a challenge.

“Now that we have our own space, we won’t have to wait on someone else’s schedule,” Rockwell explained. “We’ll be able to hold special collections more frequently and make it easier for people all over the county.”

The new building also improves security and monitoring, thanks to the installation of 16 surveillance cameras. However, Rockwell reminded residents that not all items are accepted at drop-off points. Mattresses, furniture, and other bulk waste are prohibited.

Recycling drop-off sites throughout the county, including Galion, Crestline, and the county landfill, will remain open and operational.

Construction of the new building was originally estimated at $1.2 million but the final cost is still being tallied, as some expenses are pending.

“This has been funded entirely by landfill and trash collection fees collected over the last 25 years,” he said.

The recycling office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., while the title office operates from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
