🇺🇸 National Recap: Week of April 7–13

Jordan Black Published: April 13, 2025 | Updated: April 17, 2025 3 minutes read

Tariff Games, Border Walls, and a Clown Car of Chaos

This week in America: big tech gets a break, the military grabs land, Bernie rocks LA like it’s 1972, and the administration flexes harder than facts can support. Let’s dig in.

📈 Big Tech Whines, Trump Listens

Donald Trump’s tariff tantrum on China took a convenient pause for smartphones and laptops this week. Translation: the same tech giants that cozy up to authoritarian regimes and lobby both sides of the aisle just got a multi-billion-dollar hall pass. Apple sighs in relief. You? You still pay 40 bucks for a charging cable.

🪖 The Military’s New Border Mission: Landlord

In a move that sounds less like “immigration policy” and more like Red Dawn: DHS Edition, the U.S. military was authorized to seize land along the Mexico border to “secure it.” Critics say it’s an escalation. Supporters say it’s “about time.” We say: if you’re comfortable with troops claiming land now, wait until they do it in your neighborhood over a Ring camera violation.

🧑‍🎓 Harvard Professors Sue Over Federal Overreach

The federal government decided free speech on campus is dangerous—if it criticizes Israel. A group of Harvard professors is suing after the feds launched a review of billions in contracts tied to alleged antisemitism. What’s actually happening? A political cudgel disguised as civil rights enforcement. Cue the pearl-clutching over academic freedom.

🚨 Wrongfully Deported, Still Jailed

Kilmar Abrego García, a Maryland man deported by mistake, remains locked up in El Salvador. The administration says they’re “working on it.” Which sounds like a landlord telling you your heat will be fixed by next winter.

🇺🇦 The U.S. Wants the Keys to Ukraine’s Gas Valve

Reports broke that the U.S. government tried to strongarm Ukraine into handing over control of a pipeline used to ship Russian gas. Ukraine called it a “colonial shakedown.” America called it “foreign policy.” We call it The Godfather IV: NATO Never Sleeps.

🕊️ U.S. and Iran Try Not to Blow Each Other Up

Iran and the U.S. finished a round of talks aimed at keeping nukes off the table. Early signs suggest both sides are trying to act like grownups. No missiles yet, but don’t hold your breath—unless you’re downwind from an “oops” at a centrifuge plant.

🎸 Bernie’s Still Got It

Bernie Sanders threw a massive rally in LA, complete with Joan Baez and Neil Young. Think: Woodstock for Medicare-for-All. The only thing missing was someone yelling “freebird.” With Biden barely staying conscious at podiums, and Trump planning immigration crackdowns with military backing, Bernie’s message hit different.

🚨 Lawyer Detained After Vacation Because… Yeah, That Tracks

Lebanese-American attorney Amir Makled says he was detained by immigration officials after a family vacation. No charges. No explanation. Just good ol’-fashioned passport profiling. Nothing says “welcome back to the land of the free” like being flagged by a terror response team for being brown in an airport.

🧵 Quick Threads:

  • Panama says the U.S. is launching a “camouflaged invasion.” We didn’t even know we had beef with Panama. But apparently, we do now.
  • Trump’s been golfing while the economy burns — you know, leadership.
  • The “No Labels” party still exists, somehow, like a political RadioShack.
