It wasn’t your typical high-speed chase this morning. What started as a report of a stolen 2024 Silver Dodge Ram out of Crawford County turned into a multi-agency pursuit that saw a suspect weaving through city streets, driving through farm fields, and eventually cornered at a dead end.

The Timeline of the Chase: The pursuit spanned Crawford Counties, with law enforcement tracking the vehicle through State Route 4, SR 19, and SR 98.

Tactical Battles: Officers attempted multiple PIT maneuvers to stop the truck. Despite several attempts, the driver continued to evade, at one point driving directly through fields to bypass law enforcement near Winchester West.

The Danger Factor: Early reports indicated two firearms were located inside the center console of the stolen truck, keeping officers on high alert throughout the morning.

Slow & High Speed: Conditions on country roads kept the truck at speeds as low as 20 MPH at times, before hitting 60 MPH as it headed back toward Bucyrus.

The Apprehension: The chase finally reached its breaking point at the Olentangy cul-de-sac near U.S. Route 30. Realizing he was at a dead end, the driver—identified as 39-year-old Chaz Akers—surrendered with his hands out the window after wrecking the vehicle. Akers, who was reportedly recently released from prison, was evaluated by Whetstone FD and EMS after claiming injuries at the scene.

Mental Health & Community Safety: During the pursuit, officers were alerted that the suspect might be suffering from a mental health crisis or be under the influence of narcotics.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Bucyrus Police, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, and Ohio State Highway Patrol, the suspect was taken into custody without any injuries to bystanders or law enforcement. FreeWire will continue to follow this story as formal charges are filed.
