OZZY OSBOURNE DEAD AT 76: “Prince of Darkness” remembered as a pioneer, a performer, and a cultural icon

Ozzy Osbourne, the godfather of heavy metal and one of the most influential voices in rock history, has died at the age of 76.

A statement from his family confirmed that the legendary Black Sabbath frontman passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. His death marks the end of a career that spanned more than five decades—filled with groundbreaking music, unforgettable performances, and an enduring legacy that transcended generations.

Born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, Ozzy helped found Black Sabbath in 1968. With tracks like Paranoid, Iron Man, and War Pigs, the band reshaped the sound of rock music—and arguably created the blueprint for heavy metal. Ozzy’s haunting vocals, paired with the band’s dark, distorted riffs, turned them into a global force. Even after being fired from Sabbath in 1979, Osbourne’s solo career took off like a bat out of hell. Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley, and No More Tears became anthems for headbangers everywhere.

But Ozzy wasn’t just a rock legend. He was a reality TV dad (The Osbournes), the founder of Ozzfest, and somehow—despite decades of hard living—a symbol of resilience. From biting the head off a bat onstage (yeah, that happened) to openly discussing his battles with addiction, Parkinson’s, and spinal issues, Ozzy never hid from his demons. He danced with them—and invited us to watch.

His final performance, just weeks ago, was a seated, emotional sendoff in his hometown of Birmingham. It was fittingly titled Back to the Beginning, and featured a reunion with original Black Sabbath members. Ozzy was wheeled onstage but didn’t need to stand to command the crowd—his presence alone did the job.

He is survived by his wife Sharon, their children Jack, Kelly, and Aimee, and a legion of fans who never stopped believing in the man who turned darkness into art.

Whether you saw him live, blasted his records in a garage, or just caught reruns of his chaotic family life on MTV—Ozzy Osbourne left a mark. He gave metal a face, a voice, and a soul.

Rest easy, Ozzy. And thank you—for the music, the madness, and the memories.
