Letter to the Editor: Fighting Dirty in Politics

The Community Published: November 3, 2025 | Updated: November 3, 2025 2 minutes read

Saturday, after getting off work, I picked up my son who had spent the day with his grandfather. As we drove through town, we saw Alena T. Fox at the square, so we stopped to say hello. My son knows her from school. Also present was Kurt Fankhauser, who was campaigning for another candidate, and at the same time, Mrs. Myers arrived.

While we were simply talking with Ms. Fox, Mr. Fankhauser took pictures of my child. Yes, it was a public space, but what kind of adult photographs a clearly underage child without permission, then photoshops that child into an image holding a campaign sign? Then to post it to your public Facebook page where the child can be subjected to online bullying and harassment? To drag a child into your personal political vendetta against Mr. Myers crosses every ethical line.

To those who follow and encourage that kind of behavior, how are you okay with this? When you stoop to attacking a child and publicly name-calling a parent, you reveal far more about your character than the person you’re trying to discredit. Children should always be off limits, no matter how heated politics gets.

And to Mark “Steve” Harmon, since you felt the need to comment on my son’s red hair: he inherited it from my grandfather, who was a proud redhead, as well as his father having the recessive gene in his family. But thank you for your unsolicited concern about his parentage.

Politics don’t have to be dirty. Adults should know better, and act like it.

April Rodgers Payne,

Concerned Parent and Bucyrus City Voter
