“Dark and Deadly”: The World Reacts to the U.S. Seizure of Venezuela

In an operation described by President Donald Trump as “breathtaking” and “like a television show,” U.S. Special Forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores in the early hours of Saturday morning. As Maduro arrives at a federal detention center in New York to face narco-terrorism charges, the political fallout is vibrating from the halls of Congress to the streets of Bucyrus.

The Commander-in-Chief: “We are going to run the country” Speaking from Mar-a-Lago, President Trump touted the precision of “Operation Absolute Resolve,” claiming U.S. forces rehearsed on a full-scale replica of the Venezuelan presidential palace.

“No nation in the world could achieve what America achieved yesterday,” Trump told reporters. “The lights of Caracas were largely turned off… It was dark and it was deadly.” Trump signaled a long-term occupation, stating, “We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition.” He also explicitly linked the invasion to resource recovery:

“They stole our oil… we built that industry and they took over. We’re going to make a lot of money.”

The “America First” Fracture: MTG vs. Rubio: The invasion has created a massive rift within the Republican party. Secretary of State Marco Rubio celebrated the move, posting a video of Maduro’s defiant “come get me” speeches with the caption: “If you don’t know, now you know.” However, Marjorie Taylor Greene, who recently announced her resignation from Congress effective January 5th, issued a blistering critique of the man she once championed.

“Americans’ disgust with our own government’s never-ending military aggression and support of foreign wars is justified because we are forced to pay for it,” Greene stated. “This is what many in MAGA thought they voted to end. Boy, were we wrong.”John Kasich has joined a growing chorus of moderate voices calling for immediate Congressional intervention. Kasich, who has previously described himself as “sick to his stomach” over the administration’s combative foreign policy, urged leaders on both sides to check the President’s power.

The Ohio Perspective: Kasich and Local Concern Former Ohio Governor John Kasich has joined a growing chorus of moderate voices calling for immediate Congressional intervention. Kasich, who has previously described himself as “sick to his stomach” over the administration’s combative foreign policy, urged leaders on both sides to check the President’s power. “What we are seeing is the erosion of every check and balance we have,” a source close to the Kasich camp noted, echoing the former governor’s long-standing concerns that unilateral regime change sets a “dangerous precedent” for American democracy.

The Prosecution: “The Full Wrath of Justice” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that Maduro is being held on a sweeping indictment including conspiracy to import cocaine and possession of “destructive devices.” “Nicolás Maduro will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts,” Bondi stated. “On behalf of the American people, I extend enormous thanks to President Trump, who had the courage to hold Maduro accountable.” Global Condemnation and “Illegal Coups” While the U.S. celebrates a military victory, the international community is largely in an uproar:

Brazil: President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called the bombings a “flagrant violation” of international law that “crossed an unacceptable line.” China: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated they are “deeply shocked” by the “blatant use of force against a sovereign state.”

Russia: Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denounced the raid as an “act of armed aggression” and expressed “firm solidarity” with the Venezuelan people.
