ASHLAND — Authorities have released the name of the victim and a suspect following a fatal shooting on New Year’s Day. According to the Ashland Police Division, officers and Ashland Fire Department personnel responded to a call on the 100 block of East Liberty Street just after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered 61-year-old John Grehn deceased inside the residence. A second resident, John Palermo, was present at the scene but was not harmed.

Robert Palermo, 24, of Ashland, was taken into custody at the scene without incident. He is currently being held at the Ashland County Jail in connection with the death of Mr. Grehn. As of Friday morning, the case is under review by the Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office to determine potential formal charges.

Ashland Police detectives processed the scene for evidence throughout Thursday afternoon and evening. Police have emphasized that this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public. During the investigation, a dog was found unharmed inside the home and was safely taken into the care of the Ashland County Humane Society.

This story is developing. FreeWire will provide updates as formal charges are filed.
