GALION, OHIO — A Galion Police officer is being credited with saving a life after rushing into a burning apartment building early Sunday morning.
The fire broke out at approximately 3:30 a.m. on January 25, 2026, at an apartment complex on 6th Avenue. Galion Dispatch received a 911 call reporting the structure fire, prompting an immediate response from local emergency services.
Officer Andrew Roystan was the first to arrive at the scene. Upon observing active flames, Roystan did not wait for fire crews to arrive before taking action. He immediately began evacuating residents from the threatened building.
According to a statement from the Galion Police Department, Roystan’s evacuation efforts took a critical turn when he discovered a resident unable to escape on their own. Roystan forced entry into the apartment, located the trapped individual, and carried them to safety as the fire intensified around them.
“All residents were safely removed from the building prior to the arrival of fire crews,” the department confirmed. The Galion Fire Department subsequently took over the scene and suppressed the blaze.
Body-worn camera footage of the rescue has been released on the Galion Police Department’s Facebook page, showcasing the intensity of the situation and the officer’s quick response.
Galion Police Chief Ryan Strange praised the officer’s heroism. “Our officers are often the first on scene, and their ability to take decisive action in those critical moments can make the difference between life and death,” Strange said. “We are extremely proud of Officer Roystan and the other responding officers for their quick actions and commitment to public safety during a hectic situation.”
Local authorities are encouraging anyone wishing to assist those displaced by the fire to donate to or volunteer with the American Red Cross, which is currently providing emergency assistance to the impacted families.
