BUCYRUS — The legal case against Maxwell Anatra, the 24-year-old accused in the November stabbing deaths of his parents, took a significant procedural turn this week as the court moved to assess his mental competency.
During a hearing in the Crawford County Common Pleas Court, visiting Judge Daniel T. Hogan ordered a formal evaluation to determine if Anatra is fit to stand trial. Judge Hogan, a retired jurist from Franklin County, was assigned to the case by the Ohio Supreme Court on December 2. The appearance marked Anatra’s first trip out of the Crawford County Justice Center since his initial arraignment on December 3.
Cause of Death and Prosecution Strategy Preliminary autopsy findings have confirmed that both victims—61-year-old Lisa Anatra and 63-year-old Matthew Anatra—died from multiple stab wounds.
Despite the severity of the 11-count felony indictment, Crawford County Prosecutor Matt Crall confirmed that his office will likely not be pursuing the death penalty. Crall noted that the decision followed deep discussions with the Anatra family, whose strong faith influenced the direction of the case.
“We wanted to be very sensitive to their views,” Crall said, describing the case as unique in his career. “I don’t recall a case similar to this one. It’s been a tough week at the courthouse. A lot of sadness.”
Evidence Exchange and Discovery As the evaluation proceeds, the legal teams are continuing the exchange of evidence. On January 5, Assistant Prosecutor Dan Stanley filed a formal demand for discovery, requesting all laboratory reports, hospital records, and results from any physical or mental examinations.
Defense attorney James J. Mayer III characterized the state’s comprehensive request as an “expected response” to his own discovery motion filed that same day.
Trial Date Canceled The evaluation is expected to take at least a month, which has forced the court to vacate the trial date previously set for February. No new date will be scheduled until the results of the evaluation are returned and reviewed by the court.
Maximum Penalties Anatra remains held at the Crawford County Jail on a $1 million bond. If convicted on all counts, including aggravated murder and aggravated burglary, he faces a maximum possible sentence of two consecutive life terms in prison plus an additional 61.5 years.
Next Steps The mental competency evaluation is expected to be conducted through the District V Forensic Diagnostic Center in Mansfield. The legal process is effectively paused while the court awaits these findings. No further trial dates will be scheduled until Judge Hogan reviews the results to determine if the defendant is competent to proceed.
