A scary scene unfolded Friday afternoon on Route 4 toward Marion after an older-model Ford pickup left the roadway and slammed into Trinity Monuments/Trinco Auto, damaging several headstones and the front of the building.
Witnesses in the LuLu’s restaurant parking lot—which closed for the day following the crash—told FreeWire they saw the driver fall asleep at the wheel just before the truck veered off the road and hit a utility pole. The impact sent the truck rolling through the display of monuments and into the building.
The crash narrowly missed Lisa Musselman, a family member who had been helping out at the business.
“I was terrified,” Musselman said. “I heard a noise—when he hit the pole—and I got up and looked out the window… it was headed straight toward me. The noise… was so terrifying.”
Officer Graves of the Bucyrus Police Department responded to the scene. While he could not provide the driver’s name or age, he confirmed the man fell asleep on his way to work.
The driver appeared shaken but uninjured. His mother arrived shortly after and was visibly upset but relieved her son—and everyone else—was safe. The pair apologized to the business and those on scene while taking in the damage.
Shanna Nash, who recently took over the monument and auto shop with her son Steven, had stepped away for lunch just minutes before the crash. If she hadn’t, she likely would have been standing beside Lisa—directly in the truck’s path.
That timing wasn’t lost on the family.
“We’re just grateful everyone is okay,” Nash said after returning to the scene.
Despite the significant property damage—downed pole, crushed headstones, and a damaged exterior wall—no injuries were reported.
