Tragedy Strikes Twice So Close to Home

Two Ohio communities are reeling after a pair of horrific family tragedies struck within hours of each other on Wednesday. In one case, a Crestline couple was found slain in their own home — their son now charged with their murders. In the other, Tiffin police discovered four people, including two young children, dead in an apparent murder-suicide. Both incidents unfolded on the same day in quiet towns barely an hour’s drive apart, leaving shocked neighbors and grieving families in their wake.

On Wednesday morning, November 19, Crestline police were dispatched for a welfare check at a brick home on North Henry Street after a 61-year-old woman failed to show up for work. A concerned co-worker who went to check on her reported seeing what looked like blood at the residence and called the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office who transferred her to Crestline Police Department. Officers eventually forced entry into the two-story house — where the couple had lived for three decades — and made a grim discovery. Inside, Lisa R. Anatra, 61, was found deceased, and in the detached garage authorities found the body of her husband, Matthew L. Anatra, 63. Both had been killed in what authorities describe as a double homicide.

Investigators quickly identified a suspect alarmingly close to the victims: the couple’s own son. Family members informed officers that the Anatras’ 24-year-old son, Maxwell L. Anatra, had been at the house the night before, and now nobody could reach him. As evidence mounted, an arrest warrant on murder charges was obtained, and law enforcement learned Maxwell had fled to Michigan that same morning. Police feared he might attempt to leave the country, and they alerted federal authorities.

Their fears proved justified — by 5:30 p.m., Canadian officials had apprehended Maxwell Anatra as he tried to cross the border into Canada. He was taken into custody in St. Clair County, Michigan, where he awaits extradition back to Ohio to face aggravated murder charges.

The news of the couple’s violent deaths at the hands of their son stunned the village of Crestline. Neighbors describe North Henry Street — a route many local families take on the way to the high school — as an ordinarily quiet, tight-knit area. Now, crime scene tape and police vehicles surrounded a home that had been a fixture in the community for years. While investigators have not yet disclosed a possible motive and continue processing evidence, officials were quick to assure residents that this was an isolated incident and that there was no active threat to the public in Crestline.

The task of understanding why a son could allegedly commit such an unthinkable act against his own parents is only beginning, and the small community is left grappling with shock and grief in the tragedy’s aftermath.

Murder-Suicide Leaves Four Dead in Tiffin

Only a few hours later on Wednesday evening, tragedy struck in the city of Tiffin, about 60 miles northwest of Crestline. At approximately 6:24 p.m., Tiffin police rushed to a home on the 100 block of Huss Street after frantic 911 calls reporting gunshots and screams.

What officers encountered was a scene of domestic horror. Inside the residence, they found an adult man and two young boys suffering from gunshot wounds, and a distraught mother who, though physically unharmed, was “in a state of shock, overwhelmed and visibly traumatized,” according to police. Officers also discovered a second adult man outside the home, already deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Emergency responders did all they could to save lives. Unfortunately, one of the children and the adult male found inside were pronounced dead at the house. The second child was still alive when officers arrived, police and medics provided emergency care and rushed the boy to Mercy Hospital, with his mother accompanying him. Despite “every effort by first responders and medical personnel,” the boy later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

In total, four people were killed: two children and two adult men. Miraculously, the mother — believed to be the boys’ mom — was not physically hurt by the gunfire. Authorities have not released the names or exact family relationships of the victims yet, out of respect for relatives still being notified.

Based on evidence at the scene, investigators concluded this was a murder-suicide carried out by one of the adult men. Tiffin Police say the man found outside is suspected to be the shooter who took his own life after killing the others. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called in to help process the scene, as Tiffin detectives worked late into the night gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

The horrific nature of the crime has shaken the Tiffin community to its core. “As a community, we are not accustomed to events of this horrific and heartbreaking nature in Tiffin,” Police Chief David Pauly said in a statement, describing the incident as “unimaginable.” Pauly urged residents to keep the victims’ loved ones in their thoughts as they face an unfathomable loss, and to also support the first responders who are “continuing to process the emotional toll of this tragedy.”

Neighbors on Huss Street were stunned by the sudden loss of two little boys and the violence that unfolded in their normally peaceful neighborhood. Tiffin police have emphasized that there is no ongoing danger to the public, but that offers little solace for a city grieving such a devastating incident in one of its own homes.

Twin Heartbreaks in Quiet Communities

By Thursday morning, Ohioans awoke to headlines about two separate family tragedies that struck just hours and miles apart — one in a tiny village, another in a small city. While entirely unrelated, the incidents shared an eerie timing and a heartbreaking theme: loved ones lost to violence inside the home, at the hands of a family member.

Both Crestline and Tiffin are communities where violent crime of this magnitude is rare, intensifying the shock. In Crestline, a family member allegedly betrayed the ultimate bond between parent and child, leaving relatives and friends grasping for answers. In Tiffin, a household was torn apart in an instant, with a mother left to somehow endure the unimaginable pain of losing her children and others dear to her.

Local authorities in both towns are urging the public to come together and support those affected. Counselors and clergy are mobilizing to help families and neighbors deal with the trauma. Mental health and domestic violence experts note that these cases, though extreme, underscore the importance of recognizing warning signs of familial crisis and ensuring those in distress get help before tragedies occur.

Tiffin’s police chief pointed out the emotional toll on everyone from the victims’ families to the emergency crews who responded, highlighting that healing will take time for all involved.

As investigators continue to unravel the circumstances behind each incident, these Ohio communities are left mourning and asking “Why?”. In the space of one day, two close-knit towns have been forever changed by unfathomable violence within families. Residents are lighting candles, praying, and leaning on each other — determined that even in the face of back-to-back heartbreak, they will support one another through the long road of grief ahead.

UPDATE: (Tiffin): Police have now identified the suspected shooter as 42-year-old Ryan Eagon, who investigators say shot 29-year-old Dustin Willey and two children, ages 7 years and 7 months, before killing himself. Willey later died at the hospital. Both children also died from their injuries. The children’s mother, who witnessed the attack, is not being identified under Marsy’s Law.
