High-school football teams around Crawford County and nearby communities delivered some memorable performances in Week 5. Upper Sandusky’s passing game lit up Wynford, Colonel Crawford stayed perfect, Galion’s defense pitched a shutout, Mohawk overwhelmed Bucyrus, and Crestline survived a Saturday shootout.
Upper Sandusky 44, Wynford 20 (Friday)
Upper Sandusky snapped a long drought at Wynford behind a fast start and a potent passing attack. Quarterback Keegan Dunn completed 13-of-19 passes for 248 yards and four touchdowns. On the first play from scrimmage he hit Josh Heilman on an 80-yard touchdown. The Rams stretched the lead to 14-0 on an 11-yard strike to Kasen Gottfried and added a 47-yard field goal from Kobe Beidelschies.
Wynford answered with a 62-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brayden Campbell to Braylon Wells and a 1-yard Campbell run, trimming the deficit to 23-14 at halftime.
The second half belonged to Upper. Dunn found Heilman again for a 42-yard touchdown, and senior Ethan Lewis punctuated the win with fourth-quarter scoring runs of 31 and 12 yards. Wynford’s offense, reliant on senior running back Bryce Locker’s 27 carries for 106 yards, mustered only six points after halftime. The Rams rolled up 389 yards of offense but were penalized 13 times. The 44-20 victory was Upper Sandusky’s first road win at Wynford since 2002.
Colonel Crawford 42, Buckeye Central 8 (Friday)
Undefeated Colonel Crawford rolled to its fifth win by overpowering Buckeye Central. Running back Connor McMichael opened the scoring with a 14-yard run in the first quarter. The Eagles exploded for four touchdowns in the second period: Dominic Dean scored on a 9-yard run, McMichael added a 17-yard scamper, Trace Skaggs intercepted a pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown, and Parker Weithman returned a punt 48 yards. That flurry produced a 35-0 halftime lead.
With a running clock in the second half the Eagles scored once more on Avery Powers’ 7-yard run. Buckeye Central avoided a shutout with a late touchdown. Colonel Crawford improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northern 10 Conference, while the Bucks fell to 3-2. The win underscored the Eagles’ balanced offense and opportunistic defense.
Galion 7, Ontario 0 (Friday)
Galion’s clash with Ontario was a defensive grinder. The game’s lone touchdown came early in the second quarter when Sam Evans powered through from five yards out. Ontario drove inside the red zone three times in the second half, but penalties and turnovers wiped away scoring chances. Galion coach Matt Dick acknowledged his team was worn down by a challenging schedule but praised the players for maintaining focus and emphasizing their weekly goal of going 1-0 in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference. The 7-0 road victory pushed the Tigers to 4-1 overall.
Mohawk 62, Bucyrus 7 (Friday)
Sycamore Mohawk raced to a lopsided win at Bucyrus. The Warriors jumped out to a 34-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Quarterback Zikki Magallanes orchestrated multiple touchdown drives—throwing and rushing—and running back Braxton Frisch added a 15-yard scoring run. In the second quarter Magallanes hit Owen Patrizi for a 35-yard touchdown to push the advantage to 41-0.
Bucyrus momentarily stopped the bleeding with a 15-yard touchdown run, but Mohawk answered with another touchdown pass before halftime, taking a 48-7 lead. The Warriors tacked on a 15-yard scoring run from Aden Patrizi in the third quarter and added another touchdown in the fourth to complete the 62-7 rout. The defeat dropped Bucyrus to 1-4, while Mohawk moved to 4-1.
Crestline 31, Richmond Heights 28 (Saturday)
Saturday’s only area contest produced the week’s closest finish. Crestline edged Richmond Heights 31-28, improving to 3-2 on the season and notching back-to-back victories. Richmond Heights fell to 0-5 but showed progress, as the 28-point effort was their highest offensive output so far. The Spartans, now on an eight-game losing streak dating back to last year, came within a field goal of snapping it but fell just short.
Looking ahead, Crestline faces Manchester next Saturday in what will be a stern test against a defense giving up just six points per game. Richmond Heights will try again for its first win Friday against Vanlue, whose defense has been vulnerable this season.
