Three Lorain Officers Ambushed in Targeted Attack: What We Know So Far

Three Lorain police officers were shot Wednesday afternoon in what authorities are calling a targeted ambush. The attack took place just after 1 p.m. at the dead-end of Missouri Avenue, near the Colorado Industrial Park — a remote stretch of road bordered by overgrowth and river access, far from public view. The gunman, identified as 28-year-old Michael Parker of Lorain, opened fire without warning and was later killed at the scene.

The Attack

Officers Peter Gale (51) and Phillip Wagner (35) had just picked up lunch and were parked in their cruisers, side by side, when gunfire erupted. According to officials, Parker had parked his vehicle nearby, armed himself, and waited. When he saw his chance, he unloaded on both officers in what’s being described as a calculated ambush.

Officer Brent Payne (47) responded to their distress call within minutes. As he pulled onto the dead-end, Parker turned his weapon on him as well — riddling his cruiser with bullets and striking Payne multiple times.

Additional units arrived quickly. Officers pulled their wounded colleagues to safety, gave first aid on-site, and rushed them to the hospital in their own patrol vehicles rather than wait for EMS. In the chaos, officers returned fire, ultimately killing Parker. Whether he died from police fire or a self-inflicted wound is still under investigation.

The Officers

All three officers survived the attack, though two remain in critical condition.

  • Officer Peter Gale was shot in the hand and is in stable condition at Mercy Health in Lorain.
  • Officer Phillip Wagner suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was flown to MetroHealth in Cleveland, where he remains in critical condition.
  • Officer Brent Payne was also shot multiple times and is in critical condition at MetroHealth.

Wagner and Payne both underwent emergency surgeries. As of Thursday morning, both are still fighting for their lives.

The Suspect

Michael Parker, 28, lived in Lorain and was reportedly armed with multiple weapons, including a high-powered rifle. Authorities say he parked at the dead-end with what they described as “an arsenal” and waited for an opportunity to strike. His motive remains unknown.

For a brief time, police believed there might be a second suspect, but a search of the area confirmed Parker acted alone. The scene was secured within the hour, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

What Comes Next

The Elyria Police Department is leading the investigation, assisted by state officials and forensic units. Investigators are working to piece together a timeline, identify any digital footprints, and learn more about Parker’s background and potential motive.

In the meantime, the city is reeling — but standing strong. Lorain’s mayor praised the courage of the injured officers and those who rushed in to save them. State officials have pledged support, calling the attack a sobering reminder of the risks officers face daily.

As of now, this looks like a premeditated act of violence against law enforcement. Why Parker did it — or what he hoped to accomplish — is a question that remains unanswered.

FreeWire will continue to follow this story and update you as more details are confirmed. Our thoughts are with the officers and their families.
