BUCYRUS, OH — Bucyrus High School was the center of summer football action this week, hosting nearly 20 schools for its annual 7-on-7 showcase and lineman challenge — an event that’s quickly become a staple on many programs’ summer calendars.
Urichsville Claymont came out on top in the 7-on-7 tournament, defeating Colonel Crawford 13-6 in a competitive championship game. On the other side of the field, the Bath Wildcats (Lima) flexed their strength to take first place in the lineman challenge after a dominant showing across multiple events.
Bucyrus Head Coach Jon Butchko credited the strong turnout and smooth execution to community support.
“The work of our touchdown club, coaches, and volunteers made our annual 7-on-7 and Lineman Challenge a success,” Butchko said. “We had just shy of 20 schools and this event has become a fixture on many schools’ schedule.”
As for his team’s performance, Butchko noted that while Bucyrus had a slow start in pool play, the group settled in and competed hard down the stretch.
“We were very intentional about playing many players in the varsity lineups and we have some exciting battles for positions shaping up,” he said. “I thought we competed very well in the tournament portion in our two games against Elgin and eventual champion Urichsville Claymont.”
Next up: Bucyrus will host a Middle School 7-on-7 and Lineman Challenge on Wednesday, July 24th at 3 PM — giving the next generation of Redmen a chance to take the field.
