MOUNT GILEAD — On Thursday night the community of Morrow County will gather in silence and candlelight to honor a man who gave everything to protect them.
Deputy Daniel Sherrer, 31, was shot and killed Monday night while responding to a domestic situation call in Marengo. It was Memorial Day—one meant to remember the fallen. This year, the day claimed one more.

Sherrer had been with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office since 2021. Friends and officials describe him as the kind of deputy every community hopes for: kind, calm, and dedicated. "He always had a smile on his face," Sheriff John Hinton told reporters. “He loved this community.”
In the wake of his death, that love has been returned. Flowers, candles, and handwritten notes have piled up outside the sheriff’s office, wrapped around a cruiser parked in quiet tribute. Blue ribbons line storefronts and fence posts throughout town.
Now, the public is being asked to come together for something more.
A candlelight vigil will be held Thursday, May 29 at 8:30 p.m. in downtown Mount Gilead. The event is open to all. Community members are encouraged to bring candles, wear blue, and stand in solidarity with the Sherrer family and the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office.
We’ll update with details about funeral arrangements as they become available.
