For many Americans, Cinco de Mayo is a day filled with tacos, margaritas, and music—but the real meaning behind the holiday is far more powerful.
Cinco de Mayo marks the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when a small and outnumbered Mexican army defeated French forces that were trying to take control of the country. Though often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, it actually celebrates a moment of national pride, resilience, and resistance.
That first celebration took place just weeks later on May 27, 1862, with patriotic songs, community gatherings, and remembrance. The date was officially observed on May 5 the following year—and has remained a symbol of Mexican strength ever since.
The holiday made its way to the U.S. in 1863, when Mexican Americans in California began commemorating it as a tribute to their heritage. Over time, it became more widespread across the Southwest and eventually, across the country.
In 2005, Congress encouraged all Americans to observe Cinco de Mayo with appropriate ceremonies, recognizing its cultural and historical significance. So, as you enjoy the festivities, don’t just reach for the nachos—reach for knowledge, too. Learn a few Spanish words like orgullo (pride), historia (history), or libertad (freedom). Try a new recipe from central Mexico, or take time to watch a Mexican film or listen to regional music.
This Cinco de Mayo, celebrate with purpose. Honor the culture. Appreciate the history. Make a new connection. ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
