At Bucyrus High School, it’s not uncommon to see students rising to the occasion. But for sophomores siblings Lillyan and Hayden, rising isn’t just something they do—it’s who they are.
The siblings, who live in the same blended household, have each carved out their own path of success while supporting one another every step of the way. Both were recently recognized back-to-back as Students of the Month, a rare achievement and a testament to the kind of dedication they bring to school, sports, and life in general.
“These kids live a very high standard,” said Coach Jon Butchko, their father and a familiar face on the Bucyrus football field. “I couldn’t be prouder.”
A Look at Hayden:
Hayden describes himself as focused, ambitious, and unassuming—traits that show in his performance both in and out of the classroom. After taking what he calls “a turn toward being an average student,” he made a dramatic shift, recently earning GPAs of 3.8 and 4.0. He credits his favorite teacher, Mrs. Henize, and says her ELA class has helped sharpen his drive.
A multi-sport athlete, Hayden has lettered in football, wrestling, and baseball, and is currently on the tennis team. He’s also involved in DECA and has his eye on a future in the military, with hopes of becoming a Navy SEAL or Green Beret.
When he’s not lifting weights, competing, or playing video games with friends, Hayden says he enjoys reflecting on what motivates him. For now, that’s role models like Josh Stratton, who shows him what it means to work hard and stay humble.
And in case you’re wondering—yes, he really can eat two full dinners in one sitting.
A Look at Lillyan:
Lillyan lights up any room she’s in—describing herself as friendly, optimistic, and diligent. Her favorite class is science with Ms. Eichler, and she says she’s always felt encouraged by the adults at Bucyrus to chase big dreams. One of those dreams came true this year when she qualified for DECA State in her first year of competing.
Lillyan is also deeply involved in school activities. She’s lettered in volleyball, basketball, and softball, and participates in DECA, Student Council, yearbook, and Spirit Club. When she’s not playing sports, she enjoys lifting, watching rom-coms, playing pickleball, and spending time with friends.
Her role model? Mrs. Tackett, who’s helped her aim higher and grow from every experience. Long-term, Lillyan hopes to pursue a career in psychology or sports medicine, inspired by a former trainer who made a lasting impression.
She also has a pretty unique party trick—she can wiggle her ears without touching them.
Words of Wisdom:
When asked what advice they’d offer younger students, Hayden doesn’t mince words: “Being lazy doesn’t get you anywhere.” Lillyan adds a thoughtful reminder: “Hard work can be rewarding no matter what the results are.”
Both students have big dreams—Hayden with his sights set on leadership, even mentioning politics as a future ambition, and Lillyan imagining a life filled with pets and purpose.
