BUCYRUS—A Galion man was sentenced to more than two decades in prison after he pleaded guilty to several charges in Crawford County Common Pleas Court on April 29 during a change of plea hearing.

John C. Powell, 61, was arrested by Galion Police officers on Nov. 5, 2025, after reports of a man with a gun robbing two Galion businesses were received.

Powell then led police on a short pursuit into Morrow Countywhere he was arrested without incident and taken to the Crawford County Justice Center to be held for court. All cash and any other items stolen during the robberies were retrieved and no injuries were reported during either robbery.

Powell pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies, and one charge of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.

He was sentenced to an indefinite mandatory minimum of 10 years to 15 years in prison on the first aggravated robbery charge, 10 years in prison on the second charge and two years in prison on the tampering with evidence charge.

The sentences are to be served consecutively for a minimum total of 22 years in prison. Two other charges, including a third aggravated robbery charge and one count of failure to comply with the order of a police officer, were dismissed as part of Powell’s plea agreement with prosecutors.

Powell will receive 47 days of jailtime credit.

He was also ordered to forfeit all drug-related property and firearms to the Galion Police Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and he must pay court costs.
