ONTARIO, Ohio — The Ontario Police Department released an update Thursday regarding a shooting incident that injured a 3 year-old child Wednesday night on the city’s east side.

Officers responded at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, to a residence on Landings Court after receiving reports that a young child had been struck by a bullet.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department assisted in securing the scene. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted Ontario Crime Scene Technicians with evidence collection.

According to police, the child was transported by Springfield Township EMS to OhioHealth Mansfield. The injuries were classified as non life threatening.

As the investigation continued, evidence revealed that a 6 year-old child inside the residence discovered a firearm. The weapon was subsequently discharged, unintentionally striking the 3 year-old.

Police confirmed the firearm involved has been recovered. Criminal charges are currently pending against the adults responsible for the safety and supervision of the children.

A final update will be released once those charges are finalized. The investigation remains ongoing. FreeWire will provide updates as they are released.
