Seventeen Years of Smiles: Kroger Says Goodbye to Gaylene Weber

If you’ve shopped at Kroger anytime over the past 17 years, there’s a good chance you were greeted by Gaylene Weber at the u-scan—always wth a warm smile and a friendly hello.

Gaylene, a familiar and beloved presence at the front of the store, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, after a short period of declining health.

Known for her cheerful personality and genuine kindness, Gaylene built countless connections with customers over the years. “She always remembered my name,” recalled customer Christine Miller. But to those who worked alongside her, Gaylene was more than just a coworker—she was family.

“I’ll miss this kind soul so much—especially her laugh and smile,” said Jessica Wagenblast, who considered Gaylene a dear friend. “I’ll miss her energy, her love for everything! Dolphins and manatees,” said Amber Ransom. “I’ll just miss her being there.”

Christy Hildreth echoed the sentiment: “I’ll miss her smile. Everyone knew her, and she would do anything for anyone. She was just the nicest person.”

When asked what her favorite memory of Gaylene was, Jerrika Gilliam laughed and said, “Going for Mexican and margaritas!”

Sara Bonen, a coworker and close friend, shared a Halloween memory from last year that perfectly captured their friendship. The two dressed up as peanut butter and jelly—because, as coworkers who know them best said, “they just go together like that”.

“I will always be the peanut butter to your jelly,” Sara said. “I love you, my dear friend. Never say goodbye. I will see you later.”

To honor Gaylene’s memory, Pharmacy Manager Stephanie Rinehart has organized a is looking to put a bench outside the store. “I’m hoping to put a bench outside of the front windows where u-scan is, since she spent so much of her time working there,” Rinehart said. “Then, when her friends look out the window and see the bench while working, they can smile thinking about her.”

Though her presence is deeply missed, Gaylene’s legacy of warmth, dedication, and everyday joy lives on in the hearts of her Kroger family and the many customers she greeted with kindness.
