Former Bucyrus attorney Adam Stone, 41, pleaded guilty Monday in Delaware County to third-degree telecommunications fraud and fourth-degree impersonation of a peace officer. He faces up to 54 months in prison and will be sentenced on August 26 at 8:45 a.m. by Judge James P. Schuck.
Stone, who once commanded respect in North Central Ohio courtrooms, resigned his law license in 2022, citing personal mental health challenges. At the time, he acknowledged stepping away from legal practice to better address his mental health needs.
In 2022, a 34-page disciplinary complaint was filed with the Ohio Disciplinary Counsel. The complaint alleged that over a period of more than five years, Stone deceived two clients who had retained him to investigate the suspicious death of their son. According to the complaint, Stone repeatedly provided misleading information, falsely assuring the family that state investigators were pursuing the case, that an indictment had been issued, and that law enforcement was on the verge of making an arrest.
Further complicating his legal troubles, Stone was found liable in civil court in connection with these alleged actions. While that ruling underscores the seriousness of the allegations against him, the criminal case now focuses solely on the offenses of telecommunications fraud and impersonation of a peace officer.
Stone’s attorney, Aaron A. Schwartz of Patituce & Associates, declined to comment on the developments.
This case marks a significant fall from grace for a once-prominent legal figure in the region, and the sentencing hearing on August 26 will determine the extent of the prison term that Stone may eventually serve.
