GALION — A coordinated effort involving drone technology and a K-9 unit led to the arrest of a suspect following a domestic-related incident in Galion, according to a press release issued by Galion Police Chief Ryan Strange.
Officers responded to a report of domestic violence and a violation of a court order at a residence within the city. The suspect had left the scene prior to officers’ arrival and was believed to be hiding nearby.
According to the press release, the Galion Police Department deployed its police drone to assist with locating the suspect from the air. The drone provided real-time information to officers, helping maintain situational awareness while reducing risk to both the public and responding officers.
The drone operator observed the suspect attempting to avoid detection by hiding in a wooded area, Chief Strange stated in the release. Using that information, officers and deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office established a containment area and deployed K-9 Basco to conduct a targeted search.
The coordinated use of drone technology and the K-9 unit allowed officers to locate and take the suspect into custody without incident, the release said.
Chief Strange noted that community donations made both the department’s drone program and K-9 unit possible, allowing the department to enhance public safety while minimizing risk to officers, suspects, and the community. The Galion Police Department also acknowledged the assistance of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office during the incident.
Drone footage from the arrest has been posted on the Galion Police Department Facebook page. According to the press release, the video has been edited for length and clarity and highlights the coordinated use of drone and K-9 resources during the incident.
