BUCYRUS — A Crawford County grand jury returned a five-count indictment against Daniel Hammond, 33, of Bucyrus, stemming from incidents that allegedly occurred on or about September 20, 2025.

According to court records, Hammond is charged with burglary, escape, two counts of assault on a peace officer, and one count of domestic violence.

The indictment alleges Hammond unlawfully entered an occupied structure while a person was present and under his control. He is also accused of escaping detention while being held on a felony-level offense.

Two assault charges stem from allegations that Hammond knowingly caused or attempted to cause physical harm to Bucyrus Police Officer Devin Wireman and Crawford County Sheriff Deputy Estrada while they were performing their official duties. Both assault charges are classified as felonies due to the alleged victims being peace officers.

Hammond is additionally charged with domestic violence, accused of threatening a family or household member and causing the victim to believe imminent physical harm would occur.

Hammond was arraigned September 25, 2025, in Crawford County Common Pleas Court before Magistrate Russell Long. The court appointed attorney Jennifer Harmon to represent him. Hammond entered a plea of not guilty, and bond was set at $1 million.

On October 22, 2025, the court granted an oral motion requesting a forensic evaluation to determine Hammond’s competency to stand trial and his mental condition at the time of the alleged offenses. The evaluation was ordered to be conducted by the District Forensic Diagnostic Center and completed via video while Hammond remained incarcerated at the Crawford County Justice Center.

The case returned to court on December 22, 2025, for a hearing to review the results of the forensic evaluation. The parties stipulated to the admissibility of the forensic psychologist’s findings, which concluded Hammond is competent to stand trial and was not suffering from a severe mental disease or defect at the time of the alleged acts. Hammond will not be challenging the evaluation’s conclusions.

The court ordered the case to be scheduled for a pretrial hearing at a later date. Hammond remains in custody at the Crawford County Justice Center.

Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Further proceedings will be scheduled in Crawford County Common Pleas Court.

FreeWire will continue to follow this case as it progresses.
