True friendship isn’t just about shared moments — it’s about who stands beside you when it matters most.
Friendship is supposed to be built on trust, loyalty, and accountability — but what happens when that trust is betrayed in the most harmful way? Recently, my son asked me what a true friend really is. His question got me thinking about the nature of friendship in a way I hadn’t before. As a 51-year-old Gen X mom, wife, and loyal friend who’s been around for a while, I’ve had the chance to witness friendships from both close up and afar. But it wasn’t until now, with recent events, that I really took a hard look at what true loyalty and support in a friendship should look like.
By the time you reach my age, you realize that if you have even two true friends — friends who will stand by you through thick and thin — you’re blessed. We all have people we call “friends,” but real, unwavering friendship is rare. Most people will be there when it’s convenient, but only a few will stand beside you when life gets hard.
A real friend doesn’t use you as a scapegoat to avoid consequences. A true friend admits when they’ve done wrong and apologizes. A real friend stands by your side — not just when times are easy, but when things are difficult. Even if a friend thinks you’re making the wrong choice, they’ll be honest with you, but they will still support you and help you navigate through it. That’s what makes them your friend.
Loyalty Is a Choice
The last few months has shown me just how fragile trust can be. It has also made me realize that loyalty isn’t just a word — it’s a choice. We teach our children that friends should stand by each other in good times and bad. But we also need to teach them that a true friend will never betray their trust. A real friend doesn’t abandon you in a crisis — they stand with you, even when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable. They don’t make excuses, and they certainly don’t let you suffer alone for something they caused.
At the end of the day, trust isn’t just something you earn — it’s something you protect. True friendship isn’t about who’s there for the fun moments; it’s about who stands with you when things get tough.
