Blue Jackets Shine Under The Lights at The Horseshoe with Stadium Series Win Over Detroit

Columbus Thrills Record Crowd with Stadium Series at The Shoe

The Columbus Blue Jackets delivered a thrilling 5-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Stadium Series at Ohio Stadium on March 1, 2025. The game, played in front of a record-breaking crowd of 94,751 fans, was a spectacle of high-intensity hockey, emotional tributes, and hometown pride. A Night to Remember For Columbus fans, this was more than just another game—it was a historic moment for the city.

Playing their first-ever outdoor game at The Horseshoe, the Jackets fed off the energy of the massive crowd, battling through frigid temperatures and a determined Red Wings squad. Adding to the electric atmosphere, Columbus hometown favorites Twenty One Pilots took the stage during intermission, performing a high-energy set that had fans singing along in the cold night air. The performance was a perfect tribute to the city’s passion for both music and sports, making an already special night even more memorable.

A Tribute to Johnny Gaudreau The game also served as a heartfelt tribute to Johnny Gaudreau, the former Blue Jackets star who tragically passed away in a car accident in August 2024. Both teams honored Gaudreau in their own ways—Columbus wore special jerseys inspired by his playing style, while Detroit donned jerseys from Gaudreau’s past teams, including Boston College and Team USA. Gaudreau’s widow, Meredith Gaudreau, was in attendance and took part in the pregame ceremonies, thanking fans for their continued support.

Game Highlights

The action on the ice didn’t disappoint, as both teams fought hard in a back-and-forth contest.

• Justin Danforth scored the game-winning goal with just 2:17 remaining, snapping a 3-3 tie and sending the Columbus crowd into a frenzy.

• Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins stood tall under pressure, making 43 saves to keep Detroit at bay.

• Denton Mateychuk, Dmitri Voronkov, Mathieu Olivier, and Adam Fantilli also found the back of the net for Columbus.

• On the Red Wings’ side, Alex DeBrincat scored twice, while Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists in a losing effort.

The Road Ahead With this victory, the Blue Jackets are now tied for the Eastern Conference’s top wild-card spot, making their playoff push even more intense. As the Jackets continue their season, one thing is clear—Columbus has proven it can host an outdoor game on the grandest stage, and with the city rallying behind them, the team is ready for whatever comes next.
