GALION—After four years in business, Brittany Whirl’s core mission remains the same for her downtown Galion business, RavensCloak Reiki and Treasures.
“RavensCloak prides itself on being a safe, judgment-free space for everyone who walks through our doors,” Whirl said.
The shop offers a variety of items, such as candles, crystals, framed art, wreaths, incense, tarot cards, affirmation cards and tons of gorgeous art pieces and other crafted items.
“I have about 80 local vendors, including artists and crafters, that I work with,” said Whirl.
She has recently added a book section to the shop that features both new and used titles.
“Our new books focus mostly on fantasy, romance, dark fantasy, spooky and mystery,” said Whirl. “Our used book section spans all genres. We are constantly adding more inventory so there is always something new to come in and browse.”
She is always accepting book donations of any genre, and as a thank you, anyone who donates gets a 10 percent off coupon for their next purchase in the store.
“A big goal for our book section is bringing in more local authors to help support them, give them a dedicated place to sell their work and help get their names out there,” said Whirl.
She is offering monthly author signings at her shop as another way to support local talent.
“We are thrilled to say we are already booked out through October. All of our signings run from noon to 4 p.m. and are completely free to attend. No tickets are needed and absolutely everyone is welcome. Our next one is this weekend, March 21, with Kimberly Gasuras, followed by Leslie Gorrell on April 18,” said Whirl.
Other upcoming local artists include E.L. Mendell and Leeann Teynor.
Noel Lizotte was the featured author in January, the first in the line-up at the shop, followed by author Marley O’Connor in February.
“Brittany has provided a great location for local artists and craftspeople of all styles to market their work,” said Lizotte. “She has such a positive and upbeat personality, that you just want to shop and visit all day. I’m so excited that she’s added the author events to feature local writers. She’s got a fabulous lineup of authors coming this year. I plan to visit with all of them and add some books to my library.”
Whirl herself is now writing her own book.
“It is still in the very beginning stages, but diving into the writing process has been such a fulfilling creative journey,” Whirl said. “Honestly, being surrounded by all of the fantastic genres we carry in the shop and getting to connect with amazing local authors has been incredibly inspiring.”
While she is keeping the core plot details of her book under wraps for right now, she’s been dropping a few sneak peeks regarding the overall theme and vibe of the story on her social media platforms.
RavensCloak is located at the former Payne Pizza building at 120 Harding Way West.
“The first time I walked into this shop, I felt like I could just be myself. Brittany makes everyone feel welcome,” said customer Amy Strader.
Whirl is a Reiki master teacher and has been practicing since 2016.
“Reiki is an energy-healing practice that promotes relaxation, helps relieve stress and provides a sense of overall well-being,” said Whirl, who has changed the store’s hours to free up Tuesdays for Reiki appointments.
The new hours for the shop are: Tuesdays, Reiki by appointment only. Book online or message through the RavensCloak Reiki and Treasures Facebook page. Evening appointments are also available.
The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and it is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
