Ohio State vs. Tennessee Preview

Logan Andrew Published: January 30, 2025 | Updated: February 27, 2025 4 minutes read

OSU takes the field against Tennessee at 8pm tonight

As an Ohio State fan, I can’t help but feel the electricity in the air whenever the Buckeyes hit the field — especially against a high-powered SEC opponent like the Tennessee Volunteers. Tonight’s matchup promises plenty of excitement, with two storied programs looking to make a statement under the prime-time lights.

Offensive Shootout in the Making

Ohio State has long been known for its prolific offense, and this season is no exception. The Buckeyes boast a balanced attack that can run the ball between the tackles but also stretch the field with a dynamic passing game. Tennessee, meanwhile, arrives with its own explosive style — meaning the ball could be flying up and down the field well into the fourth quarter. As a Buckeye fan, I’m thrilled at the possibility of a shootout; if there’s one thing Ohio State fans relish, it’s an offense that lights up the scoreboard.

Pressure on Defense

The Volunteers pride themselves on a fast-paced offense, so the pressure on Ohio State’s defense to contain big plays is immense. Look for the Buckeye secondary, which has struggled mightily throughout the year, to be tested early. The silver lining? Ohio State’s front seven can generate pressure up front, forcing rushed throws and turnovers. If the Buckeyes can frustrate Tennessee’s quarterback early — and give OSU’s offense the ball with short fields — momentum could swing quickly in the Scarlet and Gray’s favor.

Key Player to Watch

On the Ohio State side, quarterback Will Howard will be under the microscope. Buckeye Nation is always quick to rally around a poised signal-caller who can read defenses and hit receivers in stride. Watch also for another standout performance from OSU wideout Jerimiah Smith who’s looking to prove he’s one of the nation’s best. Tennessee will be keyed in on stifling the passing game, so timing and accuracy will be crucial.

Fan Perspective

From a Buckeye fan’s vantage point, a matchup like this is equal parts nerve-wracking and exhilarating. While we know the Volunteers will bring speed and swagger, Ohio State’s tradition of rising to the occasion under pressure gives me plenty of confidence. We’ve seen our share of classic wins against SEC foes when the stakes are highest.

Prediction

Though Tennessee can explode for points in a hurry, I believe the Buckeyes’ experience in prime-time games (against teams not name Mich — TTUN) and depth across the roster will tip the balance. If Ohio State’s offense sets the tempo and the defense stays disciplined against the Volunteers’ big-play threats, the Buckeyes have every chance to walk away victorious.

One thing’s for sure: in Columbus and throughout Buckeye Nation, excitement is running high. Win or lose, we’ll be cheering loudly from start to finish, believing that Ohio State has the talent, preparation, and tenacity to show the football world what Buckeye pride is all about. Go Bucks!
