Margaret Jean “Peg” Lyon, a beloved matriarch and pillar of her community, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, at Unger Park Acute Care in Bucyrus. She was 82.
Born on January 8, 1943, in Marion, Ohio, to the late George and Betty (Murphy) Holloway, Peg graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1961 before pursuing her calling in nursing at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Her compassionate nature shone brightly during her years as a nurse, where she dedicated herself to caring for others. On September 10, 1966, she married Dr. Ralph L. Lyon, her devoted husband of 59 years, who survives her. When their family grew, Peg gracefully transitioned from nursing to homemaking, nurturing her children with the same tenderness she had shown her patients.
A woman of many talents, Peg found joy in simple pleasures and creative pursuits. She cherished road trips, particularly to New England, where Rhode Island’s shores became her favorite spot for surf fishing. An avid gardener, she cultivated vibrant flower beds, bountiful vegetable patches, and a whimsical rock garden adorned with stones collected over the years. Her artistic flair extended to tole painting and designing intricate quilt patterns, but nothing rivaled the solace she found playing classical melodies on her baby grand piano—a lifelong passion that energized her spirit.
Peg’s generosity and faith anchored her community involvement. She was a dedicated member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church, the Bucyrus Hospital TWIG, and the Garden Club, and she devoted decades to volunteering at the hospital gift shop. Her leadership as a board member of the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons reflected her commitment to service.
Above all, Peg’s legacy lies in the boundless love she gave her family. She leaves behind her husband, Dr. Ralph Lyon; children, Ben (Andrea) Lyon and Amy (Amir) Rubin; grandchildren, Cameron, Ethan, Avi, and Maya; sister, Janet (Dwyte) Hoffman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Stephen Lyon; brother, Eugene Holloway; and nephews, Brent and Jimmy Holloway Jr.
A private family graveside service will be held at Caledonia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Ohio State University Foundation (designated for the James Cancer Hospital) via Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, OH 44820.
Peg’s warmth, creativity, and unwavering kindness will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew her. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.wisefuneral.com.
