Carolyn Shireman’s Final Pretrial Yields No Big Changes — For Now

freewiremag@gmail.com Published: July 8, 2025 | Updated: August 26, 2025 3 minutes read

BUCYRUS — Carolyn Shireman’s final pretrial hearing was held Tuesday morning, but the case remains in limbo as both sides await a ruling on whether her two felony cases will be consolidated for trial.

On July 1, the prosecution filed a motion to consolidate. Now the clock is ticking: the state must submit a written report within 10 days, and the defense will have 10 more days to respond. After both sides file their briefs, a judge will decide whether the charges will be combined into one proceeding.

If the cases are merged, the scheduled trial date—August 13, which falls in the middle of the Bratwurst Festival—will almost certainly be moved.

What She’s Charged With

Shireman, a former Bucyrus City Council member, is currently facing three felony charges across two cases:

  • Theft from a Protected Class (F2)
  • Telecommunications Fraud (F3)
  • Theft (F4)

The F2 theft charge stems from her role as Power of Attorney for a 52-year-old developmentally disabled man. Prosecutors allege she used that authority to make unauthorized purchases, including jewelry, vehicle-related expenses, and household goods.

The second case—brought after a further investigation by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office—centers around Positive Seekers Inc., the nonprofit organization Shireman founded and operated. Investigators believe she solicited donations under false pretenses and failed to properly report income, citing discrepancies between IRS filings and checks obtained during the investigation.

If convicted on all counts, Shireman could face up to 12.5 years in prison.

Background and Bond

Shireman was arrested on January 9, 2025, following a months-long investigation. After being indicted by a grand jury, she appeared in court on February 28. Visiting Judge Howard Hall granted a $25,000 bond with a 10% provision, alongside a personal recognizance bond. She was also ordered to report weekly to the probation department and cautioned to avoid social media, which she immediately and repeatedly ignored.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Shireman has remained vocal on Facebook, often framing the charges as politically motivated.
