Set your alarm clocks and your coffee pots—because the sky is putting on a show you won’t want to miss.
In the early morning hours of Friday, April 25, something magical will happen above Crawford County: a rare celestial event that’s being nicknamed the “Smiley Face Moon.” At around 5:30 a.m., just before the sun begins to rise, look toward the eastern horizon for a moment of cosmic cheer—a crescent moon forming the “smile,” flanked by two bright planets, Venus and Saturn, as the “eyes.”
It’s what astronomers call a triple conjunction, when three heavenly bodies appear close together in the sky. But for those of us on Earth, it’ll look like the universe decided to greet us with a grin.
To catch this rare alignment, you’ll need an unobstructed view of the eastern sky and a little determination to get up before the rooster crows. Right now, the forecast is calling for cloudy conditions with a low of 50 degrees that morning, so dress accordingly and hope for a break in the clouds. Even a brief glimpse could be worth it.
This is one of those moments where science meets wonder—when the moon and planets align just right to create something that feels meant just for us.
It’s a reminder to look up, even when the world feels heavy. The sky still smiles. So this Friday, don’t hit snooze. Step outside, take a breath, and look east. The universe has a message waiting just for you.
