Newly released body camera footage shows the fatal encounter that led to the death of Morrow County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Sherrer during a Memorial Day domestic violence call in Marengo. The footage, released to us on Tuesday by Morrow County Prosecutor Andrew Wick, captures the final moments of the deputy’s life and the confrontation with 53-year-old Brian Michael Wilson, who now faces charges including aggravated murder.
The video shows Deputy Sherrer arriving at a rural residence on County Road 26. According to prior reports, the call originated from a domestic situation involving gunfire before law enforcement arrived. The body cam shows Sherrer calmly approaching the home, speaking into his radio to confirm that the suspect, later identified as Wilson, was on the front porch.
Sherrer can be heard identifying Wilson as armed before issuing verbal commands. Wilson, seated with what appears to be a long gun across his lap, responds with hostility. Moments later, he warns the deputy not to come any closer, saying, “Don’t f---ing come around that corner.” Sherrer issues additional commands, but within seconds, gunfire erupts.
The footage captures the moments before and after the exchange of gunfire that follows. Sherrer is hit in the chest and collapses out of frame. A neighbor and responding deputies are later seen rendering aid, administering CPR until paramedics arrive.
Viewer Discretion Advised:
This body camera footage contains graphic and potentially distressing content related to a fatal law enforcement incident. It has been released by the Morrow County Prosecutor’s Office in the interest of transparency. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
Wilson sustained gunshot wounds to the arm and leg and was taken into custody. He was released from the hospital on May 31 and booked into the Delaware County Jail where he remains on a $5 million bond. . He has been charged with 14 counts, including aggravated murder of a peace officer, domestic violence, and felonious assault. Last week Prosecutor Andrew Wick announced that he will pursue the death penalty.
Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer, whose office took over the investigation to avoid conflict of interest, called the video “heartbreaking but necessary” and emphasized the importance of transparency. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost also issued a statement, calling Sherrer a “hero who put service above self.”
Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton described Sherrer as a dedicated public servant. “He always had a smile on his face. He loved this job, and he loved this community,” Hinton said during a press conference the day after the shooting. “That video shows what kind of courage it takes to wear the badge.”

The community of Mt. Gilead, where the sheriff’s office is based, has adorned the town in blue ribbons in Deputy Sherrer's honor. Homes, businesses, and street signs are wrapped in blue as a symbol of mourning and respect. The visual tribute reflects the deep grief and pride felt across the region for a man who gave his life in the line of duty.
Flags across Ohio were ordered to half-staff by Governor Mike DeWine in the wake of the shooting.
